Clean Beauty

Lesson Introduction

When thinking of a potential topic to teach to the class, I thought about a variety of topics to teach the class. I wanted to make sure the topic I choose to teach about was. . .

  1. A topic that I am head over heels for
  2. Something that I think is important for the class should know

After going back and forth between different topics, I finally landed on one that I wanted to “teach” about clean beauty for yourself and for the planet. As someone who has sensitive skin (eczema), I am always reading the backs of products to see what ingreidents are in there and if they are harmful to my skin. With love for the the beauty industry whether its makeup, skincare or both I am always seeing what new products are being produced. Along with makeup and skincare, I am also intrested in finding ways to help reduce my carbon footprin in order to help the envionment out. Clean beauty brings both of these topics together.

Preparation for Class

Before you read write down a sentence or two what clean beauty means to you. Once you have done that then read about clean beauty. After you have read go back to the sentence you wrote and see if your idea of clean beauty is the same or has changed. Then click on the link at the bottom to fill out the google form.

What is clean beauty? Most people assume that it is makeup and or skincare products that won’t be harmful to your skin. Or is it another way of saying natural beauty? This is true to a certain extent. Clean beauty is the use of non-toxic, natural and ethically sourced ingredients in skincare and or makeup. The concept of clean beauty stems from the belief that certain chemicals found in traditional skincare and or makeup products may be harmful to both the environment and ourselves.

Clean beauty produces avoid ingredients like paraben phthalates, formaldehydes, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, talc, silica, hydroquinone, and refined petroleum oil. Instead they prioritize natural and organic ingredients that are gentle on the skin and don’t put people’s health at risk. Also, clean beauty products are often cruelty free, vegan, plant derived, sustainably sourced and environmentally sustainable.

Most people don’t see the bigger picture of clean beauty or care for it. First off it is important to know the ingredients that we use on a daily basis such as makeup and or skincare. Many of the ingredients in our products have been linked to health problems like cancer. Using clean beauty products makes it so that you avoid exposing yourself to harmful chemicals. Also supporting brands that are committed to being a clean beauty brand, you yourself make a difference in the cosmetic industry.

The clean beauty movement is a response to the beauty industry, the growing concerns about the safety of cosmetics and skincare along with environmental impacts.  This movement is all about educating and making people aware of the ingredients that are in their everyday products. It’s about demanding that these big corporations use safer ingredients in their products. The movement also started a conversation about sustainable practices. Clean beauty raises awareness about the impacts of sustainability for the environment. When cleanness emerged, there was a switch to recycled packaging, zero waste environmental friendly inks and more. Clean beauty is a way where we can help the planet and our skin for the better.
